The Mechanic's Corner

The stuff a mechanic points at when they pop the hood. Know these and you'll never feel talked-down-to at the counter again.

ABSAnti-lock Braking
A system that rapidly pumps your brakes for you so the wheels don't lock and skid during a hard stop.
In plain EnglishIt taps the brakes faster than your foot ever could, so you can still steer while you panic-stop.
Alternator
The engine-driven generator that recharges your battery and powers the electrical system while you drive. Spun by the serpentine belt.
In plain EnglishYour battery starts the car; the alternator keeps it alive after that. When it dies, you're on borrowed time.
Brake Caliper
The clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the spinning rotor to slow the wheel.
In plain EnglishIt's the fist. The pads are the knuckles. The rotor is what gets grabbed.
Serpentine Belt
One long rubber belt that snakes around the front of the engine, driving the alternator, water pump, A/C, and power steering.
In plain EnglishOne belt runs half your accessories. When it squeals, it's begging for replacement — when it snaps, everything quits at once.
Catalytic ConverterCat
An exhaust component that chemically scrubs toxic gases into less-harmful ones before they leave the tailpipe.
In plain EnglishThe car's emissions filter. Pricey, full of precious metals, and a favorite target for thieves.
Spark Plug
A small threaded part that fires an electric spark to ignite the fuel-air mix inside each cylinder.
In plain EnglishThe match that lights the bang. Worn plugs mean rough idle, poor mileage, and hard starts.
Radiator
The finned heat-exchanger up front that sheds engine heat into the air via circulating coolant.
In plain EnglishThe engine's sweat. Lose coolant and you'll overheat fast — that's the steam under the hood.
Master Cylinder
The hydraulic pump behind the brake pedal that pushes fluid out to each caliper.
In plain EnglishPress the pedal, it sends the "stop" signal as pressure. A soft, sinking pedal usually points here.
OBD-IIOn-Board Diagnostics
The standardized computer port (under the dash since 1996) that a scan tool plugs into to read fault codes.
In plain EnglishThe car's "tell me where it hurts" jack. That's how a shop decodes your check-engine light.
Struts & Shocks
Dampers that control how much your springs bounce, keeping the tires planted over bumps.
In plain EnglishThey stop the car from pogo-ing after every pothole. Worn ones make it float and nose-dive.
CV AxleConstant Velocity
The jointed shaft that sends power to a wheel while still letting it steer and travel up and down.
In plain EnglishA clicking noise on tight turns is the classic sign one's worn out.
Wheel Alignment
Adjusting the angles of your wheels so they point true, for even tire wear and a straight-tracking car.

Where the power's made. The gearhead vocabulary — from how an engine breathes to how it puts the grunt to the ground.

CarburetorCarb
The old-school mechanical device that mixes air and fuel by suction before fuel injection took over.
In plain EnglishNo computer, just airflow and jets. Cranky in the cold, beloved by purists, common on classics.
Fuel InjectionEFI
A computer-controlled system that sprays a precise amount of fuel into the engine, replacing the carburetor.
In plain EnglishThe brain doses fuel exactly — better mileage, easy cold starts, no choke to fiddle with.
DOHCDual Overhead Cam
An engine layout with two camshafts per head, allowing four valves per cylinder and higher revs.
In plain EnglishMore valves, more breathing, more top-end power. The high-revving import recipe.
TurbochargerForced Induction
A fan driven by exhaust gas that jams extra air into the engine, making more power from the same size.
In plain EnglishIt recycles exhaust to punch air in harder. That "whoosh" and the shove in the back? That's boost.
Supercharger
Like a turbo, but belt-driven straight off the engine — instant boost, no lag.
In plain EnglishPower the second you hit the gas, that classic whine included.
Crankshaft
The main rotating shaft that converts the pistons' up-and-down motion into spinning power.
In plain EnglishThe backbone of the engine — it turns the pistons' pounding into the rotation that spins your wheels.
CamshaftCam
A lobed shaft that opens and closes the valves in time with the engine. A "bigger cam" changes power and that lumpy idle.
In plain EnglishThe conductor telling each valve when to breathe in and out.
DifferentialDiff
The gearset that splits power to the drive wheels while letting them turn at different speeds in a corner.
In plain EnglishIn a turn your outside wheel travels farther — the diff lets it spin faster so nothing binds up.
Displacement
The total volume all the cylinders sweep, measured in liters or cubic inches (a "5.0" or a "350").
In plain EnglishEngine size. Bigger generally means more power — and usually more fuel.
DrivetrainFWD / RWD / AWD
Which wheels get the power: front, rear, all, or four. Shapes how a car handles, tows, and behaves in snow.
In plain EnglishFront-drive is cheap and sure-footed; rear-drive is the fun; all-wheel grips in the nasty stuff.
Compression Ratio
How much the fuel-air mix gets squeezed before it fires. Higher means more power — and a thirst for premium fuel.
In plain EnglishTighter squeeze, bigger bang. Push it too far on cheap gas and you get engine-killing "knock."
Timing Belt / Chain
The belt or chain that keeps the camshaft and crankshaft spinning in sync so the valves and pistons never collide.
In plain EnglishMiss its replacement interval and a snapped belt can wreck the engine in a second. One of the few "do it on time" jobs.

ICEInternal Combustion Engine
Any engine that makes power by burning fuel inside it — the gas and diesel motors most cars still run.
In plain EnglishThe good old gas engine. The term only exists now because we had to start telling it apart from electric.
BEVBattery Electric
A vehicle driven purely by electric motors and a battery pack, with no gas engine at all.
In plain EnglishFully electric. No oil changes, no exhaust note — just a battery and a plug.
HybridHEV / PHEV
A car that pairs a gas engine with an electric motor. A plug-in (PHEV) can also charge from the wall.
In plain EnglishBest-of-both for a lot of folks — gas when you need range, electric when you're crawling through town.
Regenerative Braking
Slowing an electric car by running its motor backward as a generator, recapturing energy back into the battery.
In plain EnglishLift off the pedal and the car harvests its own momentum instead of wasting it as brake heat. Saves your pads, too.
kWhKilowatt-hour
The unit for battery size and energy used — an EV's version of "gallons in the tank."
In plain EnglishBigger kWh = more range, like a bigger gas tank. It's also how the charger bills you.
ADASDriver Assistance
The suite of sensor-driven aids — lane-keeping, auto-braking, adaptive cruise — that help (but don't replace) the driver.
In plain EnglishThe car's co-pilot. It's also why a modern windshield or bumper job needs the cameras recalibrated after.
Instant Torque
An electric motor delivers full twist from a standstill, with none of the rev-up a gas engine needs.
In plain EnglishWhy a heavy EV launches so hard off the line — all the shove arrives the instant you touch the pedal.
DC Fast ChargingLevel 3
High-power public charging that refills most of an EV battery in roughly 20–40 minutes, versus hours at home.
